Join the Washington Medical Commission for an educational opportunity on LGBTQ+ Health Care Needs. The webinar will cover:

• Creating a welcoming and inclusive practice for LGBTQ+ patients.
• The social and cultural barriers to health faced by LGBTQ+ patients.
• Feel comfortable addressing the unique needs of LGBTQ+ patients.
• Understand the basics of primary care for transgender patients.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

• Assess the unique needs of LGBTQ+ patients.
• Distinguish the primary care needs for transgender patients.
• Lessen the patient fear due to stigma, discrimination, and institutional bias in the health care system.

Speaker Biographies

Diana Currie, MD

Dr. Diana Currie is a faculty member of the Providence St. Peter Family Medicine Residency department in Olympia, WA.  Board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology, she has been teaching medical students and residents since 1997. Dr. Currie has a B.A. in philosophy and computer science from the University of California, Berkeley.  She attended Harvard Medical School where she received an Albert Schweitzer Fellowship in Adolescent Gynecology in underserved populations. Her longstanding interest in hormones began with her work in the endocrinology of puberty and encompasses reproduction, menopause and transgender hormone management.  She began treating gender non-conforming and transgender patients in 2000, long before there was a national spotlight on transgender people.  Dr. Currie has presented her work in the field of transgender medicine at national medical conferences.  She has given seminars in transgender healthcare and provided expertise and education for many organizations including the Washington Attorney General’s office and the American Catholic Healthcare Association.  She is the Director of Quality for Providence Medical Group and a member of the Washington Medical Commission where she advocates for equitable delivery of safe, high quality healthcare for all Washingtonians.  Her philosophy is always to try to meet the patient where they are and help safely care for them on their unique journey, while teaching the next generation of physicians.

Chelsea D. Unruh, MD

Dr. Unruh is originally from Hilsboro, Oregon. They completed an undergraduate degree in English at Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. After teaching English abroad, Dr. Unruh returned home to complete post-baccalaureate studies at Portland State University. They received medical training at Poznan University of Medical Sciences in Poznan, Poland and completed residency at Providence St. Peter Family Medicine in Olympia. They are board-certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. Dr. Unruh is also an active member of the Washington Academy of Family Physicians, Washington State Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association. They are the current Past President of the Thurston Mason County Medical Society. They are in private practice at Yelm Family Medicine providing Primary Care with OB and have a solo practice providing transgender specific care at Unruhly Medicine at the Rainbow Health Center in Olympia.
