King County MD Agrees to WMC Sanctions

OLYMPIA, WA - The Washington Medical Commission (WMC) has accepted an Agreed Order from Stephen Markus, MD (00021837) of King County.

Dr. Markus committed violations of the Uniform Disciplinary Act regarding standard of care and non-compliance with opioid prescribing rules. Dr. Markus worked as Medical Director for multiple substance use disorder clinics where his signature was being used in a scheme to bill for unnecessary drug screens. Additionally, Dr. Markus prescribed several different medications to a patient without checking the PMP, keeping records, or consulting with other providers which led to the patient's death. 

The order includes several sanctions on Dr. Markus including: restriction from supervising or employing medical providers; restriction from ownership in a testing laboratory or testing center; limitation on general prescribing; a ban on prescribing opioids; and a $15,000 fine.
