Health professionals using COVID-19 renewal deferral must renew by mail

OLYMPIA, WA – MDs and PAs that elected to defer their renewal must mail a check to the Department of Health (DOH) and cannot renew online. The DOH has stated that health professional licenses that expire on September 30, 2020, and are in the renewal process, will be considered by the department as active until October 16, 2020.

The WMC has made an allowance for practicing until October 16 in conjenction with the DOH. Although the website will show the license as expired, physicians and PAs can continue to practice until 10/16/20 while their renewal is being processed.

As previously announced by the WMC, any renewal mail postmarked by 9/30/20 will have its late fee waived. That deadeline is also extended now  to renewals that we have received - not only postmarked - by 10/16/20 at 5:00PM.

Earlier this year, active licenses for all health care professions expiring between 4/1/20 – 9/30/20 had license expiration dates extended to September 30, 2020. This was done by the DOH Secretary’s statutory authority and consistent with Governor Inslee’s Proclamation 20-32 (PDF).

The DOH licensing system is not configured to handle this change. In the system, licenses expire on 9/30/20 and cannot be renewed online. This will affect roughly 2,800 practitioners licensed through the WMC.

Practitioners who need to renew are encouraged to do so as soon as possible hecks should be made payable to the Washington State Department of Health and mailed to: P.O. Box 1099, Olympia, WA 98507-1099. If you have questions, please email medical.renewals@wmc.wa.gov.
